| Basic Etiquette in the Dojo
Aikido is more than a physical
form for self-defense. It is a physical, psychological, and spiritual path
for growth and development. The greatest understanding is gained when each
action is done with your whole, body, mind and spirit.
It is the responsibility of each member of the dojo
to help create and maintain a harmonious training atmosphere that is conducive
to learning. We all take precious time away from our family and friends to
engage in this practice for our own betterment. It's best when we make the
most of each training opportunity we have.
Therefore, to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and safety, certain
rules of etiquette are followed in the dojo:
~ When entering and leaving the
dojo, do a standing bow towards the shomen [the front of the room].
~ When stepping on and off the
mat, do a standing bow towards the shomen.
~ Class is begun and closed with
a formal sitting bow toward the shomen along with the instructor.
~ Before and after training with
a partner, thank each other with a bow.
~ Students should arrive early
enough to change into their dogi [training uniform],
take care of personal needs (bathroom, water, etc.), sweep the mat and be
lined up ready to train 5 minutes before the class is scheduled to start.
~ If you arrive after class has
begun, join the class in a manner which will not disturb the class. Arriving Late
~ If you need to leave class early,
inform the instructor before the class begins. Leaving Early
~ The Chief Instructor
is addressed as "Sensei" [teacher]. Other instructors are
addressed as "Sempai" [senior].
~ When receiving instruction, stand
or sit quietly and closely observe the instruction that is being offered.
After receiving instruction, always thank the instructor. Refrain from making
comments. To show respect for waht is offered, the student receiving the
instruction should do the technique at least twice before changing roles
- whether that person is uke or nage.
~ While you are training, do not
sit or stand with your back towards the shomen or walk between the instructor
and the shomen.
~ Remove all jewelry that could
cause an injury to yourself or your training partners (necklaces, earrings,
bracelets, rings, etc.).
~ Keep you fingernails and toenails
trimmed. (There are clippers available in the office should you forget to
do this at home.)
~ Keep your uniform clean and mended.
~ Refrain from talking during class.
If you are watching a class, do not engage in conversation with students
who are training or with others who are watching.
